i found this on xanga (thank you to the one who posted this). Next time you feel like
relapsing... try these...
1. The next time you look at yourself in the mirror (although I know we all don't like
to, sometimes we just have to), instead of picking apart the different parts of yourself you don't like (i.e. for me it's
my stomach that's always been that #1 part of me I don't ever remember liking), view yourself as a whole, instead of piece
by piece. Pretend it's a photo shoot. It's your photo shoot. YOU are the star. Remember, the mirror is your photo shoot, you're
posing for a picture, not sectioning yourself into pieces like a butcher does to a beef carcass. You're not going to greet
people with a glum look of self-loathing as you pick at body parts. You're going to greet people with a smile on your face,
looking straight out, with proper posture, maybe even a cute pose, and some hand gestures, like a wave. It's YOUR turn to
shine. This is YOUR moment. Take a while to pose for it.
2. Get a haircut. Dye your hair, or style it differently.
Paint your nails (especially helpful if you just ate and you struggle with purging). Give yourself a makeover. You know those
things that you see or smell as familiar to a bad time in relapse? Throw them out. This includes favorite cheaper jewelry,
shoes, and fragrances. Surround yourself with what you want to be a new sense of familiar. Develop a whole new style. And
if you don't? Showcase new accessories on your body. Get some new body splash or perfume. Also, get some new favorite makeup.
Reinvent yourself.
3. Develop a sense of a achievement outside of your eating disorder. Do things that make yourself
feel accomplished, and things you enjoy. For instance, one of my favorites, is to scrapbook while watching and singing along
to marathons of old MGM musicals. Or, if scrapbooking isn't your thing, do other things to keep you busy, like knitting, crocheting,
sewing, etc.
4. Write a list of achievements that are unrelated to your ED. This will help separate your goals from
your eating disordered goals. I.e. "I can do this" or "I won this award." This will help establish an identity of yourself
outside of having an eating disorder- something vital to recovering from an eating disorder.
5. Ever had a journal
that's really painful to read because you wrote it in the midst of your ED and it talks about stuff like fat, cals, ugliness,
such as that? Torch it!! You're liberated now.
6. Draw a picture of how you perceive yourself, and have someone else
draw a picture of you, and compare the two pictures. I bet you're going to find plenty of differences.
7. During the
winter, make a snow angel- you'd be surprised at how small you really are. If you can't make a snow angel, get a large roll
of paper, lay on it, and have someone trace around your body. Other media that appear on a flat surface, such as video, photos,
or even the mirror, distorts what we see and makes us look bigger than we really are. Don't trust the mirror. Or any medium
that portrays us through film and image... The reason they don't display accurately, is because they're 'thickening' what
they 'see' to compensate for a lost dimension.
8. Throw and break your bathroom scale today! It's like discus but funner!!!!
(note, please don't harm other peoples scales, they might get mad, but ask them to hide their scales when you come over.)
Also, get rid of items associated with your ED, give your pills (diet pills, dieretics, and laxatives) a trashcan funeral,
or, even better, take them out of the package and throw them one by one into the toilet, flush them down and rejoice (Note:
I have heard weaning yourself off of laxatives is more beneficial if you're taking several a day because it can leave you
with chronic constipation if you quit them cold-turkey. I.e. Take one less laxative a day. THEN when you're done, and you
have any of them leftover, then proceed with the ahead suggestion) Throw out any tools you might use to purge with. I'm not
going to give ideas on what these tools might be. Throw out any tools you use to cut with if you struggle with cutting. Because,
if anything is horrible to do, it's feeling the temptation to slip up, then be faced with the offending object to do it with.
9.
Draw or paint a picture of how ugly your eating disorder is, how much you HATE it, and CAN'T stand it.
Also, if you're
having a SI urge, instead, paint a picture of yourself, and paint a rubber band red, and snap it on the painting, instead
of harming yourself.
10. Write a list of what your body can do for you, and highlight on things that have been different
between struggling and recovery. Be sure you do this by the time you reach a healthy weight, and by the time you are in a
stable recovery. Otherwise, the comparison might not be as good as it should be.
11. You know that old spankin cute
shirt (or any other clothing item) that's still sitting on a hanger in your closet because your ED wants you to get back into
that unrealistic size? Why are you still keeping it around? Throw a party and have a "give away" day to part with your old
clothes. Invite people over who are prone to fitting your old clothes, and have a big fest of giving away your old clothes
that don't fit anymore. Put on techno music and have them put on a fashion show to everyone's amusement. Or, if you don't
know anybody else that size, you could give them away. You could give them to goodwill, Savers, any thrift stores, planet
aid, donate them to someone who needs them or something like that.
12. And, if you JUST can't part with something then
here's another idea. Believe me I had a something...
Find your nearest person who can sew well. You could ask them
to alter it and add in panels to make it your size, etc. Or, if there's no hope for it to fit ever again (such as in my case),
ask them to make it into something else, such as a handbag. It works!
13. Have a buddy system you can lean on and give
to when you're having bad and good times. This can be an actual support group that meets face-to-face, or in my case, it could
be an online one. I own a recovery blogring here on xanga, and if you're in recovery (absolutely NO pro-ana crap), you're
more than welcome to join it. I also recommend a sites such as Pale Reflections and Something Fishy, and I highly recommend
the eating disorders recovery support board on the Kiwibox site, as they have done way more than just helping me through recovery.
Also, add in here, the Healthy Recovery boards on ProBoards. There are plenty of online support groups to choose from, these
are just some of my favorites. Also, if my memory serves me correctly you can also search for local support groups on the
Something Fishy website.
14. Talk to a friend, cry on their shoulder.
15. Take a slow walk on a nice day with
someone you love. Don't focus on the exercise part of it, take it leisurely, and talk with your loved one. Say hi to the neighborhood
kids, and be sure to tease the squirrels along the way until they scale an oak tree to drop acorns on your head.
16.
Frolic in the rain, and even take a walk in it. (note: please don't do that during a thunderstorm or when there's lightening:
I don't want you getting struck by lightening!) (Hint: You can tell I love the rain, right?)
17. Fall asleep in the
porch swing on a nice warm day (be sure to put on sunblock if you're like me and you burn easily though!!!)
18. Open
your window on a rainy day. Sing, or turn up your music loud if you want to.
19. Sing your heart out or play your instruments.
20.
Write a song. (my FAVORITE way to cope).
21. Write poems.
22. Buy or get something that represents your devotion
to recovery: i.e. maybe a necklace from NEDA, a shirt from SomethingFishy, or, even, a tattoo representing your favorite way
to cope (with me, that'd be music). Or even, another pair of holes in your ears or something like that if you don't feel like
explaining. Point is, something to bring your attention to every time you look in the mirror.
23. Have money to spend
and don't enjoy the fuss of shopping for clothes? Two Words: SHOE SHOPPING. Or: other items that can be used in place of
shoes: jewelry, watches, scarves, glasses, hats, purses, any kind of accessory. And, if you're a scrapbooker, scrapbook paper
shopping is just as fashionable.
24. Play a game of chess. It keeps a person busy for a long time, and makes you think
so much your brain melts out your ears. It's wonderful mind soap when you have too many thoughts running through your mind.
I LOVE chess. Now, if I could learn to play it better... lol
25. Take a really long bath, and pamper yourself like
crazy, with as many bath accessories as you can find. Bath fizzies, bath beads, good-smelling soap, bubble bath, bath candles
if you're not like me and you don't sink them easily (lol), and of course, a nice-smelling facial mask.
